When and How to Mow Your Lawn Perfect in Mississippi

Mow in Mid-Morning
A lot of folks are tempted to get up extremely early, or wait until the absolute last minute, to mow their lawns. It’s either “get it over with” or “how much longer can I put this off?” We understand both of those mindsets, trust us, but neither will be fully effective.
Instead, aim to get your mowing done mid-morning (8:00-10:00 a.m.) to both allow the morning dew to dry and to avoid the heat that is sure to set in later on. Cutting your grass under the scalding sun can scorch your blades after a fresh trim, stunting growth.
Mowing while your yard is wet, however, can lead to clumped grass gumming up your mower deck, and it can also cause you to slip as you drive over the moist surface. It’s a delicate balance here, but one worth planning around to avoid dead grass!
- As an aside, always mow according to the “one-third rule,” when possible. Removing more than one-third of your grass’ height at one time can shock or injure the plant, causing it to rewire precious nutrients from the roots in order to heal!
Cut at the Proper Height
Different mower deck heights will suit different grass types. In alignment with the one-third rule, mowing your grass at its proper height will allow it to flourish and remain healthy even as you cut it, preserving the bright green look that every homeowner desires.
- For Zoysia, set your height at 1-2 inches
- For Centipede, up the height slightly to 1.5-2.5
Change Your Mowing Direction Weekly
This will seem like an annoyance at first, but changing your mowing direction weekly will massively benefit your lawn in the long run. Even starting in the opposite direction, or flopping from up-down to side-to-side will go a long way in preventing ruts and avoiding your grass leaning a certain way over time.
